Preparing Your Trash for Winter in the Berkshires | Delmolino & Sons Trash Removal
When temperatures drop, we don't want to be outside for very long - especially with a smelly bag of trash. However, with those lowering temperatures, comes with some other annoyances that make our live and the lives of our drivers' a bit more difficult. Nevertheless, there are things that we can do to help make it a more efficient process for everyone involved. We've compiled some tips of the trade to help with that!
Curbside Placement During Winter Storms
Do not place bins behind snowbanks: This creates hazards beyond the scope of the weather and make it difficult for the driver to see them. *** Shovel out a small cutout next to your driveway or curb specifically for your totes. ***
Clear the path: NEVER place your bins directly in the street or in the way of plows that come by.
Time it right: We ask that your totes are out and accessible by 7 am on the day of pickup. If there is active snowfall, putting them out the night before might subject them to being buried from snowplows that drive by during the night.

Preventing Trash From Freezing to the Bin
Line the bottom: Placing a flattened cereal box or newspapers on the bottom of your empty tote creates a dry barriers so bags have a harder time freezing to the inside of the bin.
Drain all liquids: Fully empty out any drinks, soups, or sauce containers before throwing them into the trash.
Double-bag wet waste: Any food scraps or wet items can be double-bagged to trap in moisture before sticking to the side walls of the tote.
The cooking spray trick: Lightly spray the inside walls of a clean tote with a non-stick cooking spray before the first freeze of the season to help avoid ice from adhering.
Protect the Totes from Snow and Ice
Keep lids tightly sealed: Snow and freezing rain entering an open tote will create a solid ice block that will be there until the end of time. Make sure your lids are shut completely!
Keep them elevated: If you can't bring your bins into a garage or other covered area for safekeeping, placing a sheet of plywood or thick cardboard underneath them can help prevent the wheels and base from freezing to the ground/ice.
Handle with care: Ice can be dangerous as is and if you have a tote full of trash, it can become quite heavy. Always watch your step!
Winter in the Berkshires can be unpredictable, but preparing your trash and recycling tote doesn't have to be difficult. Keeping your garbage dry, your lid closed, and your pickup area clean, can help make winter trash day safer and easier for everyone.
Stay warm, stay safe, and keep those totes ready for trash day!
